Who we are

Poets come in all sizes, I am learning.  The poet of the day for me is John Mellencamp, before he was John Cougar Mellencamp, John Cougar, and just John.

“Oh yeah, life goes on
Long after the thrill of livin’ is gone”

Words start to get new meaning when that is what you are looking for.  For me, I have been struggling to not listen to music to give a freshness to my life.  To gain a realness that music has blinded me to.  Sadly, I have listened to a few songs but they have been worship for me.  I mean, I worshipped God because of them.

lifehouse-who-we-are-small.jpgOne such song is off of Lifehouse’s new cd, “Who We Are”.  The song is called “Broken.” It is a great song.  I guess you could say this is the greatest hit for me this week.  It is very apparent that the members of Lifehouse are Christians, or at least they understand, better than most, what it is to have a relationship with God.

The line that sticks out to me is:
“The broken locks were a warning you got inside my head
I tried my best to be guarded, I’m an open book instead
I still see your reflection inside of my eyes
That are looking for purpose, they’re still looking for life.”

What a verse.  So many times in my life, I have heard about how we have locked rooms in our heart where we keep God out of.  Where we try to keep everything covered up because we are ashamed or scared.  But sometimes God forces open those doors to give us freedom.

“I tried my best to be guarded, I’m an open book instead.”  This is a line that hits me because most of us are guarded in intimacy.  Most of us have something that we want to keep to ourselves.  If we are truly honest, we have all struggled with being ourselves.  It is my prayer for us to be “an open book instead.”  For us to be willing to share our lives with each other.

I want each of us to be able to see the reflection of God in each other’s lives.  For each of us to point the others back to God when we fall short of what He has in store for us.  Let’s start looking for purpose, because purpose will not be found unless we search for it.  Unless we seek it with our lives.  Let’s start looking for life, as well, because Jesus came that we may have life and have it more abundantly.

I will end with the chorus of this song:
“I’m falling apart, I’m barely breathing
With a broken heart that’s still beating
In the pain is there healing
In your name I find meaning
So I’m holdin’ on, I’m holdin’ on, I’m holdin’ on
I’m barely holdin’ on to you”
